Malott Man in Jail After Stabbing his Mother

Jun 11, 2019

A 34-year-old Malott man is in jail after he allegedly stabbed his mother to death on Monday afternoon.

Okanogan County Sheriff Tony Hawley said deputies were called to the area of Old Hwy 97 and Central Street in Monday at 2:44pm Monday for a report of a female being stabbed by a male.

Hawley said deputies arrived within 7 minutes and began searching the area for the man who fled the scene on foot.

The Sheriff said with the assistance of by-standers, they were able to locate the suspect, Jose Mejia, and establish a perimeter. Mejia made his way to the river and was contacted there by three deputies.  Hawley said he resisted arrest and attempted to take one of the deputy’s guns. He said Mejia and the deputies were in the river during the struggle, but were able to take him into custody.

His mother, 64-year-old Juana Ferreria Demejia died at the scene.

Jose Mejia was transported to Mid Valley Hospital to be treated for injury to his hand and was later booked into Okanogan County Jail.

Hawley said his Office appreciates the assistance of those residents of Malott who guided deputies to the area Mejia fled.  He said, “Their assistance made his quick apprehension possible.”

The Washington State Crime lab responded to the scene to assist Detectives with the collection of evidence at the scene.
