Department of Transportation officials have moved up the reopening date for the North Cascades Highway. They say barring any unexpected weather or equipment issues, they will open the highway at 1 p.m. next Tuesday, April 16, 2013.

Jeff Adamson, Spokesman for the department said by Wednesday afternoon, the east and west side crews were only about a half mile apart. He said the west side crew had a path cleared to MP 155 and the east side crew had the highway cleared the full width to Rainy Pass and a path cut down to MP 155.6 where a rock slide halted work.

The two crews expected to meet up with each other Thursday. Adamson said it never got warmer than 35 degrees on Wednesday and rained causing more avalanche chutes to dump snow across the highway and it's going to stay there until Monday when the avalanche crew returns.

More snow and wind was forecast for Thursday, but dry and cold was the prediction for Friday.
