Road Work on Harts Pass & Chewuch Will Require Closures/Delays

Oct 02, 2017

Work is underway to make repairs to Harts Pass Road at Cache Creek and on the Chewuch Road; north and northwest of Winthrop, Washington.

Limited access and delays are expected next week for travelers on Harts Pass Road as repairs are made to improve the crossing at Cache Creek.  Passage through the area may require high ground clearance vehicles during part of the two week repair.  The Cache Creek crossing has historically been an area where mud and debris blocked the road or led to wash-outs during heavy rainfall or spring runoff.  Improvements will include a larger capacity culvert and a drivable dip, both should improve resiliency for the road and reduce sediment being swept into the stream from road washouts.

Repairs to Chewuch road are also expected to take about two weeks and a road closure will be necessary.  This work will repair a stream crossing that was damaged during spring runoff in 2016.  A temporary repair has been in place since the damage occurred.  The work in October should provide a permanent fix.

Updates about road information are posted to the forest website at www.fs.usda.gov/detail/okawen/allerts-notices
