Yakima Man Arrested for Robbing a Coffee Stand in Okanogan

Sep 10, 2020

A 29-year-old Yakima man was arrested Wednesday afternoon following a report of a robbery at Free Bird Coffee in Okanogan.

Okanogan County Sheriff Tony Hawley said Steven Mejia, of Yakima, was booked into the county jail on charges of Robbery, Attempted Kidnapping and Assault in the first degree.

Hawley said a man with tattoos on his face and wearing a black jacket came into the coffee stand on North 2nd Avenue asking for water.  Mejia allegedly told them it was a robbery and to give him everything they have.  Hawley said the 17-year-old female barista sought shelter by hiding in the bathroom, but Mejia drug her out of the room.

Hawley said multiple deputies, State Patrol and Omak Police officers responded to the area and were told the man had fled.  Mejia was located a few minutes later in the alley behind the Okanogan Post Office.
