Cattlemen sue Fish and Wildlife over gray wolves

A Washington state cattle group is suing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to force the agency to review federal protections for gray wolves in the lower 48 states.

An attorney for the Washington Cattlemen's Association says the lawsuit was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in eastern Washington. The group is represented by the Pacific Legal Foundation of Sacramento, Calif., a pro bono firm focused on private property rights.

Pacific Legal attorney Daniel Himebaugh says the government has not met its mandate to review every five years whether wolves should be listed as an endangered species.

Thousands of wolves roam the Northern Rockies and upper Great Lakes, but there are few elsewhere. Courts have reversed several attempts by the Fish and Wildlife Service to lift protections for the animals.
