Mar 02, 2014

At the end of 1A state regional playoffs Friday and Saturday, both the Okanogan boys and girls as well as the Brewster boys had advanced to the State Championships in Yakima.

The Okanogan boys advanced to the state quarterfinals for the second year in a row with a 70-60 win over Vashon Island. The Bulldogs ran their record to 24-0 with their victory over the Pirates.

They will take on Cedar Park Christian at the Yakima Sun Dome at 12:15pm on Thursday.

For the Lady Bulldogs, it was a 58-49 victory over La Salle, that earned them their third consecutive spot in the State quarterfinals

Okanogan took a 22-18 lead into halftime and slowly pulled away in the second half.

For the Brewster Bears, it was the 62-56 victory over Naches Valley that clinched their spot in the quarterfinal round.

The Bears took a 35-24 lead into halftime, they extended their lead in the third, ending the quarter with 51-33. But in the final period, Naches Valley rallied. Down by 21 at one point late in the third quarter, the Rangers cut the Bears’ lead to four with 30 seconds remaining. However Brewster was able to hold on for the victory.

The Bears will take on King’s at 2:00pm Thursday at the Sun Dome.

Mabton ended the Lady Bears quest to repeat as 1A state champions, defeating the Bears 56-44.

Both teams played sloppy basketball in the first half, and went into the locker rooms tied at 16-16.

The Bears, lost all-league senior Monica Landdeck to a leg injury two weeks ago, were thoroughly outplayed in the second half.
